Kyoto Tech Meetup Community Hack Day Wrap Up
Yesterday we held our first Community Hack Day with the Kyoto Tech Meetup. This post is a quick wrap-up of the day!
What we worked on
The idea behind the hack day is let people choose their own adventure, with an emphasis on community-oriented projects where possible.
Projects included:
- A first revision on the base Kyoto Tech Meetup website
- A genAI system for finding local businesses
- A first personal website with a MySQL-backed contact form
- Prep work for an upcoming job interview
Some teamed up, some worked solo. The only shared expectation was to make a bit of progress and share that progress at the end.
What shipped on the website
The meetup website lives in our GitHub organization at kyoto-tech/kyoto-tech.github.io .
A lot changed in one afternoon. Here are some of themes:
- A new calendar section that auto-updates based on our Meetup.com page (h/t Aidha)
- Hero image and favicon (h/t Aidha)
- i18n support with language switcher + L10n to Japanese (h/t tcz)
- OpenGraph and meta tag work (yours truly)
- Accessibility improvements (yours truly)

This blew right past my expectations of what we'd get done in just a few hours, especially with people trying Astro for the first time.
Gratitude
FabCafe Kyoto deserves a big thank you for hosting us. They let us annex a table for most of the day and it was just super fun to hack in a maker space where people are 3D printing and laser cutting.
Join us next time
If this kind of thing sounds interesting, come to a future meetup. We keep things simple and welcoming for locals and travelers alike. You can find upcoming events on the Kyoto Tech Meetup website.
