Kyoto Tech Meetup Community Hack Day Wrap-up for December
Yesterday we held our second Community Hack Day with the Kyoto Tech Meetup in space provided by FabCafe Kyoto. This post is a quick wrap-up of the day!
What we worked on
This time around, we all split up into solo projects with an aim to make some progress and report back by the end of the day.
Projects included:
- New features for the Kyoto Tech Meetup website
- A redesign case study for Meta Business Suite (doing god's work right here!)
- An issue poker tool for dev teams
- A meetup.com competitor for events in Japan
- A habit-building collaborative game
- An AI-driven local business finder
- Research on state-of-the-art computer vision tech
- Under-the-hood architecture for an app to support zoos and zookeepers
What blows my mind is the sheer range of stuff people are working on and how much gets done during just 4–5 hours of heads down time.
What shipped on the website
A couple of new features shipped on the website during the hack yesterday.
First, the site now features live events more prominently. Before, we were just removing events from the site calendar as soon as they started. Now the events stick around on the site until they end, and they get a little animation.

The site also now features content from members' RSS feeds. Members can ping me on Discord or submit a PR to src/data/member-feeds.json to be added. Feeds get updated along with our regularly scheduled cron job.

A few ideas for the future include:
- A Discord bot to announce new site updates (content, events, etc)
- A project directory
One thing I hope everyone is getting out of this meetup is the joy of shipping, and I hope some of the ongoing work to the site and the community Discord helps celebrate your wins.
Gratitude
A massive, massive thank-you goes to FabCafe Kyoto for hosting us and providing us with one of the coolest rooms I have ever written code in.

They offered us the 2nd floor of their building, complete with plugs, desks, whiteboards, meeting monitors, and a tatami room, where I spent the whole time gazing out the window on to a temple and autumn leaves next door.
Join us next time
If this kind of thing sounds interesting, come to a future meetup. We keep things simple and welcoming for locals and travelers alike. You can find upcoming events on the Kyoto Tech Meetup website.
