Kyoto Tech Meetup’s First Hack Day
Kyoto Tech Meetup's first Community Hack Day is coming up this week, on November 22, from 10:00 to 16:00.
The goal is simple: get together and let community members work on projects that contribute to the community iteself. Anyone can show up and build something on their own or with others.
Why a hack day
Our usual meetups are casual coffee chats, which is a great way to meet people. But over the last couple of sessions, I've heard an appetite for getting together and building things.
The hack day is an experiment to create that space. No talks, no agenda. Just six hours set aside to make progress on things together.
How we’re setting things up
To give meetup projects a place to live online, I created a new kyoto-tech GitHub organization.
I seeded the org with a basic site for the Kyoto Tech Meetup (live site; repo). Right now, it’s nothing more than:
- a basic landing page
- short descriptions of what the meetup does
- links to our Meetup.com/Discord/GitHub groups
It’s intentionally minimal. I want it to grow based on what people actually do at these events rather than planning a big structure upfront.
And hopefully we'll build on it together over time!
What I’m hoping for
If people come to the hack day and get something done, that’s enough. Fix a bug, test an idea, write a prototype, study for a code interview: whatever!
If it becomes a regular thing, even better. Kyoto has plenty of people doing interesting work and I want to make more chances to get hands-on in code together.
